Something interesting happens whenever I ask my coaching clients what “leadership” means to them.
Some people describe an exec whose words and direction are well-respected. Someone who sounds like a leader.
Others describe power, or showmanship – the look of leadership.
Neither are completely wrong….leaders do often need these qualities.

But is that what being a leader is really about?
I can tell you that true leadership in business – the kind that affects KPIs – is measured by what you can help your team accomplish.
Your effect on your people, day after day, and year after year, in a wide variety of circumstances.

“He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.”

― Benjamin Franklin

“But I’m too old.”

“But I don’t have enough experience.”

“But someone else has probably already done this.”

How many times have you heard a friend, family member, or loved one explain how they haven’t achieved their dreams using the word “but”?

How many times have you heard yourself using the same excuses?

It’s no coincidence. Countless people let this simple three-letter word – and the self-limiting beliefs behind it – keep them feeling stuck and unfulfilled both in their lives and their careers.

To put it simply, a “self-limiting belief” is a thought or assumption that you have about yourself and about the way the world works.

They’re “self-limiting” because they stop you from achieving what you’re truly capable of.

And beliefs lead to actions – or a lack of action.

Think of it like this:

Have you ever noticed the dips in the road where cars have worn grooves in the asphalt over time?

The long-term effects of heavy trucks and countless cars and buses driving in the same spot, year after year, change the surface of the road.

The more you tell yourself that your dreams are impossible, that you’re incapable, or that the world just isn’t fair, you’re doing the same thing to your mind.

Your self-doubt patterns are wearing deep grooves and are telling you to say “but” instead of “I can.”

“No” instead of “yes.”

Before you can do anything about it though, you need to find out why you’re making excuses for yourself.

Is it fear? Not having enough knowledge? A general lack of confidence?

Take some time to think about why you feel you can’t

And then work on how you can.

Luckily, it’s a new month and February happens to be “No Excuses Month.”

This month, start giving your dreams and goals a fighting chance.

That business idea you’ve had for years….the job promotion you deserve…planning for the retirement of your dreams…. no matter how “impossible”, you can find the inner strength to make your dreams come true sooner than you ever thought possible.

And if you’ve taken the time to identify your “whys,” then you’re ready for the next step.

If you want to remove the biggest roadblock to your success, take the “but” out of your vocabulary.

Check out my best-selling book, All Buts Stink!

In it, we dive into time management, accountability, fear, and more, equipping you with the tools you need to face your biggest fears head-on, and the mindset you need to make it work instead of making excuses.

So, it’s time to get started. This month, identify your whys, take “but” out of your vocabulary and write yourself a new story.

No excuses.

Some of life’s journeys are harder than others.

And as a business leader, chances are you’re the kind of person who takes the road less traveled.

If you’re on that path, I’m proud of you. It’s not for the weak.

There’ll be A LOT of times where you’ll find yourself at a crossroads.

But here’s a thought for you, brave soul….

What if I told you there was an easier way to get to where you want to go – no matter how hard the journey?

What’s the secret?

The answer is going to shock you, I promise….

Are you ready?

You sure?

Invest in your map.

Maps are drawn by people who have been there.

They’ve made the journey, maybe even a few times.

And they’ve marked every cliff, every broken bridge, all the peaks, and places where there’s quicksand.

Right now you may be thinking, “I’m independent. I do everything myself! I don’t need a map!”

Trust me, I understand where you’re coming from.

Running a business can sometimes feel like a lone, treacherous journey.

You may feel that the only way to go through your unique business journey is on your own.

And a map written by someone else can feel like a questionable shortcut…

But here’s the thing…

Maps don’t force you on any one path. They just light the way.

Just like a good mentor.

A mentor can serve as your navigator, a guide that shines a light in the dark.

They’ve “been there and done that” and have the knowledge and insight to help you understand the right path to your destination.

Finding your navigator is an entirely different journey.

Can you think of someone, right now, who can help you light the way?

In the past 19 years, I’ve spoken to thousands of teams and organizations, all struggling with similar problems…and I’ve taken those learnings and condensed them for the good of any persons smart enough to pick them up.

Check out my upcoming Bootcamp.

It may be the purposeful way to connect with a mentor that you need right now.

This month, I want you to think about allowing yourself to become vulnerable.

Because it is only through opening up that you can accept generosity.

Your mentor is out there, waiting to help you with a lantern and map in hand.

“One must cultivate one’s own garden.”
-Voltaire

Take a moment to imagine yourself starting your own personal garden.

Where would you start?

You could throw some seeds on the ground and hope for the best.

But if you plant where the ground is not ready…chances are you’re just throwing away the seeds.

And if you plant without a plan, you’re likely to end up with a mess.

But what if you had someone to help you?

A more experienced gardener who could tell you what to plant, when to plant it, and how to spot when your fruits and vegetables were ripe and juicy?

Someone to help you work smarter, not harder?

Running a business can be a lot like tending a garden.

Taking a step back to strategize is as necessary to your business’ success as it is for a gardener to become deeply familiar with the growth of the fruit on his trees.

If you’re going to reap the benefits, you got to sow with a plan – and master that plan.

And picking your opportunity at the wrong time in your business (aka, when you’re in the weeds) will result in a rotten harvest.

The best time to do it is BEFORE you plant. When you can work on your business.

Before you’re working in your business

The best time is your time off – what we like to call your “Off-Season.

Because the Off-Season is where planning gets done. Where “downtime” becomes “done time.”

And learning to make the most of your “strategic time off” is the perfect place to start.

If you struggle with taking a break and knowing when to hit the “reset” button on your business, you might want to check out my next upcoming 1-day “Off-Season Bootcamp.”

Just last week, my team and I coached a small group of hungry entrepreneurs on how to use their strategic time off in 2021 – and I can assure you they got their money’s worth

Will you be at our next session?

This month, I want to remind you to take the time to tend to all of your gardens.

Your business. Your health. Your relationships.

And you may find that all you ever needed for all of them to thrive was a little time off to think.

“We must find time to stop and thank those who make a difference in our life”

John F. Kennedy

Take a second to imagine yourself scaling the side of a mountain.

Every stone you grab, every inch you climb, takes you higher than you’ve ever been before.

But a quick glance down reminds you how much just one misstep can cost you.

Yeah, you might have trained for this.

But that doesn’t make each step any less scary!

But what if someone were already waiting for you at the top?

Someone who could throw you a rope – a lifeline, really – to help make your climb, and your footing, a little more sure.

Running a business can sometimes feel like climbing a mountain alone.

Not only is the pressure near-constant, but it can be hard to see the peak when you’re hanging on for dear life.

It’s a weighty job, even for the extremely confident.

Which is why having a mentor is so vital.

A mentor can share the wisdom – and the vision – you need on an ongoing basis to have a direct, positive impact on the growth of your business.

Can you think of someone who’s already changed your course in life? Maybe a teacher, a boss, or even a friend that helped you get where you are today?

If so, this National Mentor Month is the perfect time to call them up and tell them how much you appreciate them.

But what if you haven’t met that person yet?

Now’s as good a time as any to start looking!

To start your search, you might want to check out my book Swim! , a story about mentorship and the power of human connection.

This month, I’d encourage you to take a little away from time obsessing about facts, figures.

Think about the people in your life.

You might find that your mentor is waiting in plain sight – ready to throw you that rope from the top.

If transitioning back to the office isn’t going as smoothly as planned….

….if these months of working from home have taken a toll on productivity….

….if you sense company morale is getting lower….

….if breakdowns in communication are happening more frequently…..

What’s the first step to getting back on track?

It may seem like too large of an endeavor to address all these problems at once.

But you can start zeroing in on what’s really causing the issues in the first place.

We’ve developed a 13-question test to help team leaders take a frank look at how their teams are REALLY doing – and keeping your people dialed-in, productive, and feeling supported.

Take the quiz here

Do any of these sound familiar?

Quality of work is becoming an issue….”

“We’re just not seeing the passion we had a few months ago….”

“People are starting to show signs of being unhappy…”

“We’re starting to see more and more PTO requests…”

Believe me when I tell you – these aren’t one-off problems.

These are symptoms of something much larger brewing inside your organization….

….something that could cost you hundreds of thousands in HR costs by this time next year.

We’ve developed a 13-question test to help team leaders take a frank look at how their teams are REALLY doing – and what they can do to turn things around sooner rather than later.

Take the quiz here.

We’ve spent a lot of time this year listening.

With feedback from a wide variety of business leaders, we’ve been able to develop a program to alleviate strains felt by overtaxed management and disconnected, stressed-out employees.

But there’s always room for improvement.

What challenges can we help your team overcome in 2020?

Take 2 minutes to answer this brief survey.

We know you’re busy, but it will make a HUGE difference for both of us.
