Something interesting happens whenever I ask my coaching clients what “leadership” means to them.
Some people describe an exec whose words and direction are well-respected. Someone who sounds like a leader.
Others describe power, or showmanship – the look of leadership.
Neither are completely wrong….leaders do often need these qualities.

But is that what being a leader is really about?
I can tell you that true leadership in business – the kind that affects KPIs – is measured by what you can help your team accomplish.
Your effect on your people, day after day, and year after year, in a wide variety of circumstances.

“The problem human beings face is not that we aim too high and fail, but that we aim too low and succeed.” — Michelangelo

The single most important factor that impacts whether or not a person finds success – whether it be in their personal or professional lives -– is…

Mindset.

Think of it this way. The human brain LOVES a pattern.

What you think about day in and day out directly impacts what you do.

Not the other way around.

So it’s essential to get this foundational element right.

Again: mindset accounts for the primary distinction between who achieves success and who does not.

And if you’re serious about achieving success in any and all parts of your life, you must master yours.

If you don’t do anything else this month, start adopting these four mindsets of super-successful people:

1. Growth Mindset

A growth mindset thrives on challenges and sees any failures as opportunities for growth and as a stepping stone for your next move. Learning to cultivate a growth mindset is like planting a seed in rich soil. It encourages the plant to flourish from the start. Alternatively, planting a seed in earth that’s dry and barren is what we call a fixed mindset. You only set the plant up for failure from the very beginning.

2. Celebrating the success of others

Celebrating others’ success is important for your success. If that seems a little strange, here’s why you should: If you can’t celebrate others’ success, why would anyone celebrate yours?

When you celebrate others, you foster creativity and build community. And if you’re not where you want to be, your day will come. But until that day, you can always start by focusing on the good others are putting out into the world!

3. Embrace your mistakes

We’re conditioned to hide our shortcomings and lie to cover missteps in order to appear successful to our competitors, loved ones, and ourselves. Doing this will only HURT you in the long run.

Get rid of your buts

This one is HUGE.

It involves the way you speak to yourself – your internal vocabulary. If you want to be successful, take the word “but” out of the conversation!

In my line of work, I meet people all of the time who are unsettled. Folks have a concept or idea and it dies there. Their dreams end up dying because they’re too busy saying “no” to themselves and don’t know what to say “yes” to.

When I wrote my best-selling book All Buts Stink!, one of my main goals was to help teach people how to lock into their vision.

All Buts Stink! Is for for people who need to start saying YES. but don’t know how.

Here’s what a few happy readers had to say about it:

“Walter Bond is a gem. If he can’t fire you up … you’re dead.” – Don Sturgill

“This book has helped me usher out my “But’s” and do what I know to do. Very good teaching and read.” – Kim

“Walter is a tremendous speaker and this book is a great read. I mean, I watched the guy play ball at Williams Arena back in 1989 or 1990, sixth man then. Now he is the man! Couldn’t be happier for the guy and the points he fires at you are meant to stick.”
– SDhuntingdog4

With a positive mindset shift comes success. Are you ready to take command over your vision and future? If so, make the conscious decision to master your mindset to achieve the success you deserves.

“He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.”

― Benjamin Franklin

“But I’m too old.”

“But I don’t have enough experience.”

“But someone else has probably already done this.”

How many times have you heard a friend, family member, or loved one explain how they haven’t achieved their dreams using the word “but”?

How many times have you heard yourself using the same excuses?

It’s no coincidence. Countless people let this simple three-letter word – and the self-limiting beliefs behind it – keep them feeling stuck and unfulfilled both in their lives and their careers.

To put it simply, a “self-limiting belief” is a thought or assumption that you have about yourself and about the way the world works.

They’re “self-limiting” because they stop you from achieving what you’re truly capable of.

And beliefs lead to actions – or a lack of action.

Think of it like this:

Have you ever noticed the dips in the road where cars have worn grooves in the asphalt over time?

The long-term effects of heavy trucks and countless cars and buses driving in the same spot, year after year, change the surface of the road.

The more you tell yourself that your dreams are impossible, that you’re incapable, or that the world just isn’t fair, you’re doing the same thing to your mind.

Your self-doubt patterns are wearing deep grooves and are telling you to say “but” instead of “I can.”

“No” instead of “yes.”

Before you can do anything about it though, you need to find out why you’re making excuses for yourself.

Is it fear? Not having enough knowledge? A general lack of confidence?

Take some time to think about why you feel you can’t

And then work on how you can.

Luckily, it’s a new month and February happens to be “No Excuses Month.”

This month, start giving your dreams and goals a fighting chance.

That business idea you’ve had for years….the job promotion you deserve…planning for the retirement of your dreams…. no matter how “impossible”, you can find the inner strength to make your dreams come true sooner than you ever thought possible.

And if you’ve taken the time to identify your “whys,” then you’re ready for the next step.

If you want to remove the biggest roadblock to your success, take the “but” out of your vocabulary.

Check out my best-selling book, All Buts Stink!

In it, we dive into time management, accountability, fear, and more, equipping you with the tools you need to face your biggest fears head-on, and the mindset you need to make it work instead of making excuses.

So, it’s time to get started. This month, identify your whys, take “but” out of your vocabulary and write yourself a new story.

No excuses.

Some of life’s journeys are harder than others.

And as a business leader, chances are you’re the kind of person who takes the road less traveled.

If you’re on that path, I’m proud of you. It’s not for the weak.

There’ll be A LOT of times where you’ll find yourself at a crossroads.

But here’s a thought for you, brave soul….

What if I told you there was an easier way to get to where you want to go – no matter how hard the journey?

What’s the secret?

The answer is going to shock you, I promise….

Are you ready?

You sure?

Invest in your map.

Maps are drawn by people who have been there.

They’ve made the journey, maybe even a few times.

And they’ve marked every cliff, every broken bridge, all the peaks, and places where there’s quicksand.

Right now you may be thinking, “I’m independent. I do everything myself! I don’t need a map!”

Trust me, I understand where you’re coming from.

Running a business can sometimes feel like a lone, treacherous journey.

You may feel that the only way to go through your unique business journey is on your own.

And a map written by someone else can feel like a questionable shortcut…

But here’s the thing…

Maps don’t force you on any one path. They just light the way.

Just like a good mentor.

A mentor can serve as your navigator, a guide that shines a light in the dark.

They’ve “been there and done that” and have the knowledge and insight to help you understand the right path to your destination.

Finding your navigator is an entirely different journey.

Can you think of someone, right now, who can help you light the way?

In the past 19 years, I’ve spoken to thousands of teams and organizations, all struggling with similar problems…and I’ve taken those learnings and condensed them for the good of any persons smart enough to pick them up.

Check out my upcoming Bootcamp.

It may be the purposeful way to connect with a mentor that you need right now.

This month, I want you to think about allowing yourself to become vulnerable.

Because it is only through opening up that you can accept generosity.

Your mentor is out there, waiting to help you with a lantern and map in hand.

“One must cultivate one’s own garden.”
-Voltaire

Take a moment to imagine yourself starting your own personal garden.

Where would you start?

You could throw some seeds on the ground and hope for the best.

But if you plant where the ground is not ready…chances are you’re just throwing away the seeds.

And if you plant without a plan, you’re likely to end up with a mess.

But what if you had someone to help you?

A more experienced gardener who could tell you what to plant, when to plant it, and how to spot when your fruits and vegetables were ripe and juicy?

Someone to help you work smarter, not harder?

Running a business can be a lot like tending a garden.

Taking a step back to strategize is as necessary to your business’ success as it is for a gardener to become deeply familiar with the growth of the fruit on his trees.

If you’re going to reap the benefits, you got to sow with a plan – and master that plan.

And picking your opportunity at the wrong time in your business (aka, when you’re in the weeds) will result in a rotten harvest.

The best time to do it is BEFORE you plant. When you can work on your business.

Before you’re working in your business

The best time is your time off – what we like to call your “Off-Season.

Because the Off-Season is where planning gets done. Where “downtime” becomes “done time.”

And learning to make the most of your “strategic time off” is the perfect place to start.

If you struggle with taking a break and knowing when to hit the “reset” button on your business, you might want to check out my next upcoming 1-day “Off-Season Bootcamp.”

Just last week, my team and I coached a small group of hungry entrepreneurs on how to use their strategic time off in 2021 – and I can assure you they got their money’s worth

Will you be at our next session?

This month, I want to remind you to take the time to tend to all of your gardens.

Your business. Your health. Your relationships.

And you may find that all you ever needed for all of them to thrive was a little time off to think.

If transitioning back to the office isn’t going as smoothly as planned….

….if these months of working from home have taken a toll on productivity….

….if you sense company morale is getting lower….

….if breakdowns in communication are happening more frequently…..

What’s the first step to getting back on track?

It may seem like too large of an endeavor to address all these problems at once.

But you can start zeroing in on what’s really causing the issues in the first place.

We’ve developed a 13-question test to help team leaders take a frank look at how their teams are REALLY doing – and keeping your people dialed-in, productive, and feeling supported.

Do you know what the number one complaint among workers in 2020 is?

You might think it’s uncertainty. Maybe job security.

But according to a recent study done by Metlife, that’s not the case.

It’s being tired.

The freedom of working at home has come at a price – added stress from poor work location, children and pets, and a million other distractions.

And dysfunctional management isn’t helping.

Another study found that “managers ability to coach and not boss” is the reason for 70% of variance in employee engagement scores.

Seventy-percent.

The hard truth is, without a properly re-trained management team, you’re looking at a rough Q3 and Q4.

More absences.

More burnout.

Dramatically lower productivity.

You might get the same time out of them, but definitely not the energy or passion.

Make sure your management team is equipped to deliver the emotional support, clarity, and strategies to make
remote work easier. Click here to check out how we build high performing teams here (virtual teams too).
