“That can’t be right”

If you’re a business leader (or a manager), this might be your first thought after reading the following numbers:

80% of US employees feel stressed due to ineffective company communication. 63% want to quit because of it. (Dynamic Signal)

69% of leaders admit to witnessing “finger pointing, deflecting, blaming, and/or making excuses for behaviors” on their teams (iTeam)

85%  of global workers are either not engaged or actively disengaged at work (Gallup)

How could so many businesses struggle with the same problems?

The answer is actually simple.

Few, if any, have stopped to address the root cause.

As a training organization, we’ve discovered the often-overlooked sources of workplace dysfunctions – and in the process, helped business leaders across the country transform work groups into truly UNSTOPPABLE organizations.

Do any of these sound familiar?

Quality of work is becoming an issue….”

“We’re just not seeing the passion we had a few months ago….”

“People are starting to show signs of being unhappy…”

“We’re starting to see more and more PTO requests…”

Believe me when I tell you – these aren’t one-off problems.

These are symptoms of something much larger brewing inside your organization….

….something that could cost you hundreds of thousands in HR costs by this time next year.

We’ve developed a 13-question test to help team leaders take a frank look at how their teams are REALLY doing – and what they can do to turn things around sooner rather than later.

Take the quiz here.

Do you know what the number one complaint among workers in 2020 is?

You might think it’s uncertainty. Maybe job security.

But according to a recent study done by Metlife, that’s not the case.

It’s being tired.

The freedom of working at home has come at a price – added stress from poor work location, children and pets, and a million other distractions.

And dysfunctional management isn’t helping.

Another study found that “managers ability to coach and not boss” is the reason for 70% of variance in employee engagement scores.

Seventy-percent.

The hard truth is, without a properly re-trained management team, you’re looking at a rough Q3 and Q4.

More absences.

More burnout.

Dramatically lower productivity.

You might get the same time out of them, but definitely not the energy or passion.

Make sure your management team is equipped to deliver the emotional support, clarity, and strategies to make
remote work easier. Click here to check out how we build high performing teams here (virtual teams too).

An old connection puts you on to a once-in-a-lifetime job opportunity.

Drinks with a friend leads to a business idea that could turn your whole year around.

Can you guess what these events have in common?

They’re a direct result of being aligned with the right people.

Well, I’d expand on that…

Some people will tell you that it’s not so much what you know, as it is who you know.

Nearly every major win you’ll experience in this life will have something to do with knowing the right people at the right time.

That’s why this week’s emails are all about relationships.

Be on the lookout for tips on how you can:

  • Recognize and cultivate potential relationships of mutual benefit
  • How to get other people to value being connected with you
  • How the strongest networkers (read “Sharks”) leverage their opportunities

What do people like Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet, and Elon Musk have in common?

Yeah, they’re billionaires and household names. But how did they get there?

Here’s the simplest way to boil it down.

Each of these “giants” tapped into the same power.

One of the greatest powers on Earth, really.

They chose a mission. And then they committed 100%.

Jeff committed his all to Amazon when it was just an office in his garage.

Years before anyone called him “The Oracle of Omaha”, Buffet committed to growing Berkshire Hathaway

Not only did they make obscene amounts of money – they became institutions.

That same power is available to you – but not without discipline.

We talk about training yourself to harness the power of commitment in one of our favorite audio training programs, “Habits and Rituals“. You can check it out here.

And be on the lookout for this week’s Shark Bite, where we’ll be talking about….you guessed it…the importance of commitment.

I can give you a six-word formula for success: Think things through – then follow through

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your commitment to following through?

Ok.

Now what if I asked someone else to rate you?

Someone like a coworker, or your boss, or someone on your team. Maybe a customer…

Would they say you’re someone who DOES?

Or would they say you’re…..more of a talker, than a doer

Someone with good ideas, but “OK” follow-through?

FACT: One of the most powerful ways people rate you – as a business person, as a boss, as a person – is whether or not you’re really “about it”!

Even more importantly, if you’re not willing to follow-through (and keep following-through morning, noon, and night with dogged persistence)….

….YOU’VE ALREADY SET YOURSELF UP TO FAIL.

So before you say “Yes I will”, ask yourself these four things vital questions:

Sharks,

Covid-19 has robbed us of many things.

For those unaffected health-wise, it could be milestones in life that were permanently altered.

For my youngest daughter, like many other young people across the country, it was a chance to attend her college graduation in cap and gown.

It’s ok to mourn the loss of these things.

But never lose sight of what you still have.

Stay focused on the goals you can affect right now – what’s next on your list to conquer.

Do that, and I promise you that what’s coming will be much brighter.

So, to all you dreamers and high-achievers out there, I have a question: What’s next for you?

We’ve been brainwashed. Yes, we’ve been brainwashed. Think about it, we went to kindergarten and if we were mediocre, we got promoted to the next level called elementary school. We went to elementary school, if we were at least mediocre, we got promoted to high school. Am I right or wrong? And all you had to do is be mediocre in high school, and some of you guys were a pain in the butt, and they graduated you anyway because they didn’t want to deal with you the next year, am I right or wrong? So we’ve been conditioned to get promoted, even if we’re mediocre. Mistake. We’ve been conditioned, that someone else is in charge of our promotion. Our next level. I’m here to tell you as a former professional athlete, all we talked about was the next level and most people think the next level is a cliche. The next level is not a cliche, the next level is a lifestyle. The next level is a tangible place. In three years, I’ve doubled my NBA income in the marketplace. That’s what I call the next level. See I firmly believe that making money is easy. I’ve been in business 15 years. Every year my salary and income gets bigger, stronger and faster. Why? Because I understand the keys to that proverbial next level. You are in charge of your next level. You cannot expect to get promoted to that next level, if you are mediocre. Some of you guys are doing the five million, you want to get your next level, it’s going to require you to become somebody different. If you’re at ten million, you want to get to twenty million, you can, but you must become someone different.

In my coaching program, I gotta cost, a concept called the “Black-Tie Effect”. Oh, I wish I had more time. It’s called a “Black-Tie Effect”. If you don’t own your own tuxedo, and go to at least six to ten black-tie events in your market, you suck. There’s no better way, for you, to distinguish yourself as a top business leader in your area, than to go to black-tie events. I didn’t say fundraiser. Black-tie events attract the top businessmen in your area, and what happens at a black-tie event? You sit at the table, and in America we ask two questions. What are those two questions? What is your name, and what do you do? What is your name, and what do you do? What would happen, in your local marketplace, you became known as a philanthropist? What would happen, in your local marketplace, you were known as being charitable? What would happen, in your local marketplace, if all the other business owners, who are highly successful, not only know your company, but they know you personally? Can I ask you a question? How many black tie events do you go to? When I stopped playing basketball, I had no money coming in, and all I would do is go to black-tie events and be around highly successful people. But I would sit at the table, and they would ask me my name. The second question I was waiting for. What do you do? Well, I’m a former NBA player, but now I’m a motivational speaker. And at those black-tie events, you know they attract not only successful business people, they attract the good guys too. See, snake business guys who only care about money, they don’t go to black-tie events. People who go to black-tie events care about the community. People who go to black-tie events make a difference in their community. Let me tell you something, I noticed right away at the black-tie events, these were the successful people that I wanted to know, and I began to build leverage, I began to build a brand by building relationships with the top business people in my community because I was willing to go to black-tie events. There’s nothing more important you can do, business owner, than to buy you a tuxedo to go to black-tie events, because everybody in the building, is gonna ask you your name and they’re gonna ask you what you do. What would happen if your company became endeared to some charity in your community? Ladies, what better way is it to build the culture? Some of you wives, why don’t you drive this, he’s busy trying to make money, you drive to charity, you found the organization, and you make sure that your company is synonymous with some philanthropic area in the community. There’s nothing better than changing a life! There’s nothing better than blessing somebody who’s less fortunate! I’ve made a commitment, I looked in the spirit of people who were trying to get to that next level. Start your business with charity, there’s no better methodology than that.
